What are cookies?

Cookies (and other similar resources such as local shared objects, flash cookies, web beacons, bugs, etc.) are text files that contain small amounts of information downloaded onto the device a user employs when visiting a website. • Excepted customization cookies: These allow remembering information so that the user can access the service by configuring certain characteristics that can differentiate their experience from that of other users; for example, the language, the number of results to display when the user performs a search, the appearance or content of the service based on the type of browser through which the user accesses the service or the region from which the user accesses the service, etc.
• Excepted analytics or audience measurement cookies: These are cookies used to obtain anonymous traffic and performance statistics that do not require consent if they are used exclusively by the website publisher, without any exploitation by a third party, and are limited to the following measurements:

  • List of pages from which a link has been followed to request the current page (sometimes called “referrer”), whether internal or external to the site, per page and aggregated daily.

These types of cookies will only be active for a maximum of thirteen months, after which express consent from the user will be required again. Personal data obtained will not be retained beyond twenty-four months.

 

Cookies non-exempt from Consent

Cookies can be classified according to different criteria. From a legal point of view, as explained in the previous section, there are excepted and non-excepted cookies. Other classification criteria consider the type of cookie management (first-party or third-party), activation time (session cookies and permanent cookies), or purpose.

The classification of non-excepted cookies according to purpose is particularly relevant. From this perspective, non-excepted cookies can be:

• Non-excepted customization cookies: These allow the user to access the service with some general characteristics that are not based on an option exercised by the user but are automatically applied by the website, for example, based on the detected region of navigation access.

• Plug-in cookies: Cookies used by external content provider plugins are necessary for the user to access content or services previously requested, such as viewing videos hosted on YouTube, geographical locations on Google Maps, connecting with social networks, etc. These cookies are governed by the respective cookie policies of the external providers.

By clicking on the social media plugins included on a website, your browser will connect to the server of the corresponding social network so that the social network provider will know from which website the user accessed the social network site. If you wish to avoid this linkage, you must log out of the social network website before visiting any other website.
